About

Signal, not noise.

What matters in data governance, and why.

Data governance professionals are expected to follow regulators in several jurisdictions, new standards, court decisions, research and a fast-moving vendor market — while doing their actual job. Most of what is published does not matter to them. Some of it matters a great deal.

Data Governance Signal follows more than seventy carefully selected sources — data protection authorities, the European Commission, standards bodies, professional associations, specialist law firms, researchers and vendors — and selects what is worth your time.

Our mission

Regulation, AI governance and practical data management — connected, for the people who make it work.

Privacy news covers the law. Data management media covers tools and techniques. AI governance coverage sits somewhere in between. But the people who run data governance in organisations — data owners, stewards, governance leads, MDM and data quality teams, DPOs — deal with all three at once. We connect them: what changed, whether it is already an obligation, and what to check in your own data, processes and controls.

What you get with every item

  • A short, original summary of what happened.
  • Why it matters — the business and governance impact.
  • Governance areas affected and who should care.
  • An importance rating, from background to critical.
  • Links to every source, with primary sources marked.

Who it is for

Chief data officers, data governance leads, data stewards and owners, data protection officers, compliance and risk professionals, AI governance teams and the consultants who work with them.

How it works

An automated process checks our sources several times a day, removes duplicates and uses AI to assess relevance and draft summaries. Nothing is published without review by a human editor, who edits, approves or rejects every item. Read our editorial policy and methodology, including the full list of sources, for the details.

The editor

Every item is reviewed and approved by the editor, who also writes The Monday Signal, our weekly column. The Steward is the pen name of the editor of Data Governance Signal — a practitioner in master data management since 2011 and in data governance since 2019, with governance leadership and AI governance roles.

The editor writes under a pen name because they work in the field. The pen name is used consistently, the column is clearly labelled as opinion, and where a topic could involve a conflict of interest — for example a vendor or organisation the editor has a working relationship with — the column says so.
