The agency used internal records and State Department and DHS data to fill gaps, but an advocacy group warns that errors in the DHS SAVE service could be copied into SSA files.

~390 million: Total SSN records covered by SSA's data cleanup, according to the agency

The US Social Security Administration (SSA) says it has corrected nearly 15% of active Social Security Numbers, across 330 million citizens and nearly 390 million total records, according to Nextgov/FCW’s report of an agency press release. SSA links the work to fraud prevention and programme administration.

According to SSA, the work added 17 million missing death dates using internal SSA and State Department data. It also updated about 25 million records lacking citizenship information using the Department of Homeland Security’s SAVE service. A further 8.5 million records with inaccurate immigration status are still being corrected.

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, a nonprofit, called SAVE “incomplete and prone to errors” in an 23 October blog post. It said the service has wrongly flagged citizens as non-citizens, and warned that those inaccuracies could pass into SSA files. SSA referred questions to its release.

Why it matters

The case shows how filling gaps in a master record from another system's data improves completeness but can also import that system's errors into downstream identity and eligibility decisions. Teams enriching master or reference data from external sources should record the provenance of each corrected attribute and assess the source's known error rates. They should also define what happens when sources disagree and keep enough lineage to reverse a bad bulk update. Where corrections affect individuals' rights or benefits, accuracy obligations and routes for individuals to challenge changes need to be planned before the update runs, not after.

Status: Announced. SSA reports corrections made; 8.5 million immigration-status records still in progress
