IMY finds Swedish Police breached camera surveillance signage rules at Gothenburg Central Station
Following a complaint, the Swedish regulator found that signs did not clearly tell people, including those arriving by train, that they were entering a monitored area.

Sweden’s data protection authority, IMY, has found that the Swedish Police Authority breached the Camera Surveillance Act at Gothenburg Central Station. Its review found that the police had not met the requirement to inform people clearly, for example through signs, in direct connection with the monitored area.
The review followed a complaint and was limited to the Act’s information requirement. Under that requirement, it must be clear which area is under surveillance. As a rule, people should also be informed before they enter it.
In its decision, IMY identifies places where more signs are needed. In particular, there was no clear signage for people arriving at the station by train, which IMY says must be corrected. IMY’s announcement does not mention a fine.
Why it matters
The decision shows that signs must cover every route into a monitored space, not only the main entrances. Organisations running CCTV in multi-entry sites such as stations, campuses or retail centres should map each entry point, including platforms and service routes. They should then confirm that people see a notice before they cross into the monitored area. It is also worth recording where signs are placed and how the monitored area is defined, so that you can respond to a complaint with evidence.
Status: Decision. Breach found; additional signage ordered, no fine mentioned
