Collibra acquires Munich-based Trail ML to add automated AI governance to its AI Command Center

Trail's agents map AI systems to frameworks such as the EU AI Act, ISO 42001 and the NIST AI RMF, assess controls against evidence and add runtime limits on what AI agents can do.

Trail ML: Munich AI governance start-up acquired by Collibra for its AI Command Center

Collibra has announced the acquisition of Trail ML, a Munich-based AI governance company founded in 2023. Trail’s capabilities will be folded into Collibra AI Command Center. The announcement does not disclose financial terms.

According to Collibra, Trail’s agents analyse an AI system, determine which requirements apply from frameworks such as the EU AI Act, ISO 42001 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and then read evidence including documents, spreadsheets, technical documentation and code to judge whether controls are in place and effective. The company says findings link back to their sources, are updated as evidence changes and keep human review where required.

Trail also brings runtime controls that, Collibra says, let organisations define which tools an agent may use and block actions when policy conditions are violated. Collibra positions this as combining its catalogue of data, owners and policies with continuous control assessment.

Why it matters

The deal reflects a shift from document-based AI assessments to continuous, evidence-linked control testing tied to catalogue metadata on data, owners and use cases. Teams preparing AI Act or ISO 42001 evidence should check whether their AI inventory records ownership, data lineage and deployment changes well enough to trigger reassessment automatically. Where agents act in production, governance leads should consider whether tool and action permissions are defined as enforceable policy rather than written guidance, and how automated assessments are reviewed and signed off by accountable people.

Status: Announced. Financial terms and closing status not disclosed
